» [Jean-Pierre Torrell]--"This is a new version of Initiation à saint Thomas d'Aquin: sa personne et son oeuvre which was published almost twenty years ago. Its dimensions and erudition made this book inaccessible to many readers, and I have often been asked to make a simplified presentation to make it available to a wider public. Without sacrificing any of the value of the first book, this second version satisfies that request. The structure of the first book has been totally respected, but I deliberately left out the scientific apparatus to facilitate reading. Yet this is not simply an abridgement I have sometimes modified my positions, rewritten or moved, even completed certain passages to take into account more recent research. If anyone would like to know more about my motives and my choices, they can always consult the ‘Initiation' section where they will find the references to material that has been omitted here. The essence remains unchanged: to learn to read the works of Saint Thomas in such a way as to discover the man who was their author. He who has too often been presented as a timeless thinker was indeed situated well in his time and space, and in precise historical circumstances. Buffeted around the roads of Europe by religious obedience, he was obliged to work in haste, torn between a thousand different tasks and leaving many unfinished. His search for eternal Truth, guided by almost all of the philosophers and theologians known in his times whose works he tirelessly scrutinized and commented, was accomplished under the sign of urgency and precariousness. As we read, we observe not only that the saint is inseparable from the philosopher and the theologian, but that he was also a spiritual master. The believer's reflection in faith was, for him, a path to holiness, and this shines forth from his work." [Jean-Pierre Torrell]"
