" (Georges Rouault 1956) -- " In my first interview with Suarès (...) I knew what to say to him (...) I knew after just a few minutes, before he came into the room, I quoted some lines to him, he caught on immediately. I realised he had real flair and I felt close to him (...). So it was that the Passion came about, written by Suarès, published by Vollard, that I illustrated - very broadly, as I always do, without taking too much interest in the text, not following it word by word, but extending (...) the long and very free dialogue I had begun with its author. I liked Suarès for his artistic sensitivity, his universal culture, his understanding of things from which he may have been, to all appearances, quite distant. Even better than certain renowned Catholics, he was able to reach religious grandeur. We understood each other in a few words; without drawing any other comparisons, I would say we were like Barbey d'Aurevilly and Léon Bloy, a certain kinship of spirit and the heart; subtlety of a higher order that can't be explained. If he had less faith than me, I didn't draw any vain pleasure from the fact. I thought we could work together on one of the great themes that has always interested me, that of Christ's suffering and death, without either one of us making any sacrifices to the other in terms of his personal convictions or the interpretation of certain words or facts recounted in the Gospel. For instance, I didn't know whether Suarès believed in the Resurrection of Jesus, which I myself have never doubted. He doesn't mention it in the book anyway, whereas I commemorated it on one of the last full page illustrations." (Georges Rouault 1956)
